Anything can be connected to STEM practices - cars, Minecraft, movies, and more! Research ways you can connect your child's hobbies to science!
A child's favorite hobby already contains questions worth exploring. A car fan may wonder why one vehicle rolls farther, while a movie fan may notice how shadows create an effect. Begin with the child's interest and use a small investigation to make one question more precise.
Follow the question inside the hobby
Listen before introducing a lesson. Ask what your child wants to find out and what they already think happens. Keep their familiar vocabulary, then add one useful term when it helps explain an observation. There is no need to turn every favorite activity into homework.
An interest becomes an investigation when the child compares evidence. A toy-car project can examine motion and surface contact. Friction influences how contacting surfaces interact, but a rough surface can also deform beneath a wheel. Describe what the test shows without reducing every result to a single cause. [1]
Compare how a car rolls on two surfaces
Materials: A toy car, a cardboard ramp, books, paper, a towel or fabric strip, masking tape, and a ruler. Secure the ramp on a low surface and keep the testing area clear.
- Choose a comparison. Place paper beyond the ramp and predict how far the car will travel after leaving it. Mark the ramp's position and the car's release point before the first run.
- Repeat the test. Release the car without pushing and measure from the ramp's end to where it stops. Try three runs, then replace the paper with fabric while keeping the ramp setup unchanged.
- Discuss the evidence. Compare all the distances instead of choosing one memorable run. Check whether fabric bunching or a different release affected a result. Repeat an uncertain trial and record what happened.
Return to the original interest
Ask where similar surface effects appear in a bicycle ride, toy track, or game. A useful explanation distinguishes the measured result from a possible cause. If the results overlap, that is a reason to improve the test, not to force a winner.
