NASA's Project ORBIT Expands Aerospace and Robotics Pathways for Florida Students

Aerospace education | School to career pathways

NASA recently highlighted Project ORBIT, a Space Florida initiative supported through NASA's new State Hubs program. The project is intended to expand opportunities for middle- and high-school students, strengthen enrollment in career and technical programs, and connect education with aerospace employers.

The program is already connected to a wider school network. NASA reported that the Space Florida Academy has grown from 23 to 42 participating school districts since its launch in 2024. Students have worked in areas such as aerospace engineering, robotics, building trades, welding, cloud computing, and flight exploration.

That variety matters because the space industry is larger than the jobs most students first imagine. A student who likes building may find a path in manufacturing. Someone who prefers computer systems may work with data or cybersecurity. Another student may discover an interest in testing, maintenance, or operations rather than spacecraft design.

The school visits also show the value of seeing technical work in person. A flight simulator, robotics lab, or engineering project gives students something concrete to discuss with instructors. It can turn a distant career into a sequence of skills that students can begin practicing now.

For K-12 STEM programs, Project ORBIT offers a model based on connection: schools provide the foundation, industry provides a view of real work, and students get chances to test whether a field interests them. The most important outcome may be helping students recognize more than one route into aerospace.
